What over-optimization is and why it hurts
Over-optimization is the paradox of SEO: an attempt to improve positions with aggressive technical tricks that ends up damaging them. Search algorithms are trained on billions of pages and are good at telling content written for people from content written for machines.
The typical forms
Keyword stuffing — mechanically inserting key phrases beyond any natural density. “Buy trainers London. Our trainers in London are the best trainers. Trainers in London with delivery” is the classic example. Some engines run filters aimed specifically at this pattern — Yandex, the dominant search engine in Russia and several CIS markets, has a named one for over-optimised copy.
Unnatural anchors — a link profile in which 80% of inbound links use the exact target keyword as the anchor. A natural profile carries varied anchors: branded, bare URLs, generic phrases and keywords, in mixed proportions.
Over-optimised titles — a template of the form “Buy [product] in [city] — [product] price — [brand]” instead of an informative headline. The searcher sees spam in the results and the click-through falls.
Doorway pages — a mass of thin pages built for every low-volume query with no value of their own. Google treats such clusters as manipulation.
| Technique | Normal SEO | Over-optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords in copy | Natural, 1–2% density | 5%+ inserted mechanically |
| Title | Informative, one or two keywords | Three or more keywords strung together |
| Links | Varied anchors | 80%+ exact-match keyword |
| Pages | Unique content | A template page per tail query |
Penalties and recovery
Google’s algorithmic filters — Panda for content quality, Penguin for links — apply automatically, as do the equivalent filters other engines run against over-optimised copy. Once the violations are cleared, positions recover on the next crawl, anywhere from a few weeks to a few months later.
Manual actions from Google’s team appear in Search Console under Manual Actions. They require you to:
1. Fix the violations
2. Submit a reconsideration request describing the changes
3. Wait for the reviewers’ reply, usually one to four weeks
Tip: the best way to avoid over-optimization is to write for the reader first and check the result against search engine requirements second, rather than the other way round.
